Types of Rigid Couplings
Rigid couplings are used in applications requiring shaft alignment. These couplings allow for smooth power transmission. They also provide a secure connection.
There are many different rigid coupling designs. Various types of set screws, sleeves, clamps, flanges, and universal joints are available.
The most common type is the set screw coupling. This design uses an embedded set screw to secure the shaft. A keyway can be added for increased retention. Some couplings are designed to accommodate angular misalignment.
These types of shaft rigid coupling typically come in two-piece, three-piece or one-piece designs. The one-piece design can be placed on the shaft end and secured with four Allen screws. However, one-piece rigid couplings are not designed to absorb any misalignment.
Two-piece rigid couplings are the more convenient option for those with greater axial load capacity. Unlike one-piece designs, two-piece couplings can be assembled anywhere.

The rigid shaft couplings are completely interchangeable to other industry standard rigid couplings. The steel designs come with either a plain, black oxide, or zinc finish. They are offered in a variety of bore and keyways sizes, including metric bores and keyways.

Rated torque is the maximum service torque for which the device is rated. Rated speed is the maximum rated rotational speed of the coupling. Stiffness is expressed in torque per units of angular deformation (degrees). Backlash, the rotational position loss due to a change, is also measured in degrees.
